Synonyms: Disodium Metasilicate, Disodium Monosilicate, Silicic acid (H2SiO3), disodium salt, disodiumtrioxosilicate, Na2SiO3, (Silibrite SMS anhydrate), Na2SiO3.5H2O (Silibrite SMS pentahydrate)
Silibrite SMS softens hard water (especially Ca and Mg), allowing surfactants to be more effective. Silibrite SMS inhibits scaling and corrosion by laying a protective coating over the cleaned surface. The high pH of Silibrite types breaks down dirt.
Silibrite SMS anhydrate contains no crystal water, is more effective and more expensive than Silibrite SMS pentahydrate (5 molecules crystal water per molecule per metasilicate group).
Notwithstanding their classification in concentrated form (UN3253, Class 8, Packaging group III), Silibrite SMS metasilicates are made of sand and will, in the rinse water after cleaning, only be found back as minerals. There is no threat to aquatic organisms. Silibrite SMS are no marine pollutants according to IMDG/IMO.
